Seeing Clearly

Every person you encounter arrives with a story. Not just a history - a lived narrative of who they are, what has happened to them, what they believe is wrong, what they fear most, and what they most need from this encounter. Almost none of that is in the file. And almost none of it is systematically sought. This module is about the gap between the person you think you are seeing and the person who is actually there. It draws on cognitive psychology, narrative medicine and cultural humility to examine the perceptual filters that shape every professional encounter - and to give you the tools to see past them. Because the most important clinical and professional skill is not technical. It is the ability to see another human being clearly - past your assumptions, past their presentation, past the story you arrived with. That skill is learnable. And it changes everything.

The shortcuts of perception Confirmation bias, the halo effect, the horn effect - how the mind constructs its version of the person in front of you before you have fully seen them

Five communication styles The talker, the stoic, the private person, the agreeable person, the difficult person - what each one is actually communicating beneath the surface

Cultural humility and the explanatory model Why knowing about a culture is not the same as understanding the person in front of you - and reflections as you go that surface what you actually need to know
