Dignity in everyday care

Dignity violations are almost never intentional. They arise from inattention - from task focus, time pressure and habit. They accumulate. Small erosion by small erosion, until the person in front of you feels that they have ceased to be a person and become a problem. This module explores both dimensions of dignity: the psychology of what it means to feel dignified or undignified - drawing on the work of Donna Hicks, Harvey Max Chochinov and Tom Kitwood - and the specific moments in physical care, language, information-sharing and autonomy where dignity is either honoured or eroded. It also explores what dignity asks of you personally. The quality of attention required to protect another person's dignity is not automatic. It is a practice - one that this module invites you to begin. Because the person in front of you is not a problem to be solved. They are a human being to be seen.
